LUCKNOW, June 9 -- Adopting a tough stand on the recent lawyers' strike, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court on Monday issued notices to office-bearers of Central and Lucknow Bar Associations besides three advocates. The court asked why criminal contempt proceedings should not be initiated against them. On boycott of judicial work and lawyers' strike, the court said why the complaint about their conduct should not be sent to Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh. The vacation bench of Justice Rajesh Singh Chauhan and Justice Rajeev Bharti passed the order while hearing a PIL filed by Anuradha Singh and others. Earlier, while hearing the matter, the court had ordered the removal of encroachments by lawyers and others around the district court premises in Kaiserbagh. Advocates had opposed the Lucknow Municipal Corporation's drive on May 17, which led to a lathicharge by police on agitators. Thereafter, advocates went on a strike. In its order, the court said advocates in Lucknow had refrained from judicial work from May 18 to May 26, on the call of both bar associations, violating clear directions of the Supreme Court and the high court. The court termed it prima facie illegal and improper. The order said neither any advocate nor any bar association has the right to boycott courts or go on strike. The bench also issued notices to advocates Uttam Tripathi, Himanshu Mishra and Brijesh Kumar Yadav, directing them to file replies with affidavits within two weeks. The next hearing in the matter will be on July 27....
