Haryana's Sunil stuns top seed Atharva, books a berth in semis
LUCKNOW, April 2 -- Qualifier Sunil Kumar from Haryana secured a spot in the singles semi-finals of the inaugural KSM Yunus AITA Prize Money Tennis Tournament with an upset victory over top seeded Atharva Sharma from Maharashtra. On the other hand, Eklavya Singh and Anshuman Singh from Uttar Pradesh were eliminated following their defeats.
Players displayed exceptional form during the matches held on Wednesday. In the singles quarterfinals, the second seed, Sarthak Soodan from Delhi, defeated Eklavya Singh from Uttar Pradesh with a score of 6-3, 1-6, 6-0.
Sarthak showcased a powerful serve and executed brilliant shots in the first set. In the second set, Eklavya leveled the match by delivering fast serves and precise shots. In the third and decisive set, Sarthak secured the victory and his place in the final four by employing aggressive returns and outmaneuvering his opponent.
Meanwhile, the fourth seed, Mukil Ramanan from Tamil Nadu, took the lead in the first set against the fifth seed, Anshuman Singh from Uttar Pradesh, winning a tie-break 7-6 (5). In the second set, with Mukil leading 3-0, Anshuman retired from the match, thereby handing Mukil a ticket to the semi-finals.
Haryana's qualifier, Sunil Kumar, pulled off a major upset. Sunil stunned everyone by defeating the top seeded Atharva Sharma in a thrilling contest that went to a tie-break, winning 1-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3. Atharva had established an early lead in the first set with his blistering gameplay.
In the second set, Sunil prevailed, successfully navigating the pressure of the tie-break. In the decisive third set, Sunil demonstrated composure and clinched crucial points to turn the tide of the match in his favor. Elsewhere, qualifier Amit from Rajasthan advanced to the semi-finals by defeating Harsh Malik from Haryana 6-4, 6-4.
In the doubles quarterfinals, the duo of Atharva Sharma and Anoop Mahadev advanced to the semi-finals by defeating Sarthak Soodan and Amrit in a super tie-break 4-6, 7-5, 10-6. Meanwhile, Vansh Bisht and Mukil Ramanan defeated Rajeshwar and Panshul Oboveja 6-2, 6-3.
Additionally, Dhruv Ghanghas and Harsh Malik defeated Arun Kumar Kaushik and Yasharth Chaddha 6-3, 6-4, while Sunil Kumar and Eklavya Singh secured a spot in the final four by defeating Chinmay Dev Chauhan and Anshuman Singh 6-0, 6-3.
Unseeded Riddhiman Rajput pulled off a major upset to secure a spot in the semi-finals in the AITA Champions Series, at the At the KD Singh 'Babu' Stadium on Wednesday, Riddhiman defeated the top-seeded player, Pavith Singh, in straight sets with a score of 6-2 to reach the final four. Meanwhile, third-seeded Yuvraj Singh and fourth-seeded Tejas Singh also booked their tickets to the semi-finals with victories.
In the quarterfinals of the girls' singles category on Wednesday, unseeded Anvi Bhatia secured a place in the semi-finals by defeating the third-seeded Reet Singh Patel in a hard-fought match 6-2, 7-5. Fourth-seeded Anvesha Singh, top-seeded Siddhi Singh, and second-seeded Saundarya Jaiswal won their respective matches to advance to the final four....
