KANPUR, May 8 -- Five bodies have been recovered while an 11-year-old boy remains missing after a boat carrying wedding guests capsized in the Yamuna river in Hamirpur on Wednesday evening. Rescue operations continued on Thursday amid difficult weather and river conditions. The incident occurred during a routine river crossing near Kutubpur Patia village in the Kurara police station area under Bhauli gram panchayat, about 32 kilometres from the district headquarters. Following the wedding on May 5, relatives of the bride had crossed to a family-owned island in the river to eat melons and cucumbers. Eleven people, including the boatman, boarded the boat for the return journey. The vessel reportedly lost balance midstream and overturned. A local resident, Dhiru, managed to rescue three people- boatman Vishnu, Rinku and Parul-but could not save the others. One another could also manage to swim safely. While others drowned. The deceased have been identified as Rani, 9, Akanksha, 9, Lavyansh, 11, Archana, 14, and Brajrani, 25. The victims were close relatives of the bride, including cousins and aunts. Aditya, 11, the son of the bride's uncle, remains missing. At the riverbank on Thursday, distraught family members waited as rescue teams continued their search. The mother of the missing teen, standing before officials with folded hands, pleaded, "Sahab, mera bachcha le aaiye." Local MLA Manoj Prajapati, who was present at the site, said five bodies had been recovered and efforts were underway to trace the missing child. "The work is going on despite inclement weather," he said. "The administration is fully engaged in rescue and relief work." Heavy rain and stormy weather forced rescuers to suspend operations around 11 pm on Wednesday. The search resumed at 6 am on Thursday, with 10 boats deployed in the river. Three bodies were recovered between 9 am and 10 am, while two more were found by early afternoon. Officials said the river's depth was hampering rescue efforts, with divers struggling to reach deeper sections. Rescue teams are using boats and nets around the submerged area to aid the operation.
