LUCKNOW, July 24 -- Calling it a crime marked by exceptional brutality and calculated vengeance, the Uttar Pradesh government on Thursday rejected the premature release of a life convict who orchestrated an acid attack that killed the mother of a rape survivor after being convicted in the survivor's rape case. The state government, acting on the recommendations of district authorities and the Probation Board, held that the convict's release would be incompatible with the gravity of the offence, observing that the possibility of him committing further crimes could not be ruled out. In an order issued on Thursday, governor Anandiben Patel rejected the application of Bablu Singh, a life convict lodged in Bulandshahr district jail, for premature release under the Prisoners Release on Probation Act, 1938. According to the official record, Bablu Singh of Bulandshahr's Dharpa village, nursed a grudge after being convicted in a case involving the rape of the complainant's daughter. Instead of accepting the court's verdict, he allegedly decided to retaliate against the victim's family. On the intervening night of August 13 and 14, 2010, Singh, accompanied by two aides, allegedly arrived at the complainant's house carrying buckets filled with acid. In a premeditated attack, they hurled the acid at the family while they were inside the house. The rape survivor's mother suffered severe burns and later died during treatment. Other members of the family, including children, sustained grievous burns. The government order describes the offence as a heinous and barbaric crime, committed solely to avenge the rape conviction. It notes that the murder was the culmination of a calculated plan to terrorise and punish the victim's family for pursuing justice. Bablu Singh was later convicted under sections 326/34 and 304/34 of the Indian Penal Code in the 2010 sessions trial and was awarded a life term on September 4, 2014.
