LUCKNOW, Aug. 2 -- A 17-year-old girl was allegedly hacked to death by her elder brother in Bajehra village, under the Rampur Mathura police station area of Sitapur district, on Saturday morning. The murder comes just days after the teenager had been reunited with her family by the police, having previously left home with a local youth. According to the police, the victim was repeatedly struck with a 'banka' -a heavy, curved agricultural weapon - by her 22-year-old brother, Komal. The attack occurred following a heated argument over the teenager's relationship. The police were looking for Komal and three other villagers allegedly involved in the crime. Two suspects were detained for questioning while raids were underway to nab the others. While the family told police that the girl's brother murdered her after repeated disputes over her relationship with a local youth, Anurag, 23, the formal complaint named Komal and three other villagers as accused in the case. Based on the complaint submitted by the victim's family, police were registering a case under section (1)(Murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Officials said the exact role of each accused was being investigated. The case came to light after family members told police that tensions had increased following the teenager's relationship with the youth. According to the family's account, the girl had left home with Anurag on July 22. Police traced the duo the next day and handed the girl back to her family. Since her return, there were frequent arguments in the family, especially between the victim and her brother, said police. On the day of the incident, an argument reportedly broke out between the siblings. The victim's mother told police that she intervened and separated them, asking Komal to leave the house. However, he allegedly returned a short while later, assaulted his sister, chased her when she ran outside to escape, and repeatedly attacked her with a sharp-edged weapon, causing fatal injuries. Additional superintendent of police (South) Durgesh Kumar Singh said efforts to arrest the remaining accused had been intensified and all aspects of the case were being investigated. He said senior officers inspected the scene, the forensic team collected evidence and legal proceedings were underway based on the family's complaint. The victim's body was sent for a post-mortem examination.
