LUCKNOW, Sept. 30 -- Union textiles minister Giriraj Singh on Tuesday said Uttar Pradesh's industrial identity had changed from the old "katta industry" to modern defence production, including BrahMos missiles and fighter jets, reflecting improvements in law and order, infrastructure and industrial capacity. Addressing the closing ceremony of the Uttar Pradesh International Trade Show (UPITS-2026) at India Expo Centre & Mart, Singh said a stronger UP meant a stronger India. Citing Jewar airport, expressways and improved road and air connectivity, he said better infrastructure was facilitating business activity. "There was a time when the state was seen in the context of katta industry, but today the discussion is about manufacturing modern defence products like BrahMos missile and fighter jets. This change shows capacity developing in the industrial and defence sector," said Singh. "India's youth power is the country's biggest strength and UP is an important centre of this power," he said. Singh said UPITS had provided a global platform to entrepreneurs, exporters and artisans, while One District One Product (ODOP) products needed modern technology, packaging, branding and global market linkages. He said exports, manufacturing and MSMEs would play a key role in achieving the state's $1-trillion economy target. Targeting the Opposition, Singh described the Congress-SP alliance as a "thugbandhan" and accused Rahul Gandhi of depending on allies. On Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, he alleged the opposition was trying to discredit the Election Commission and Supreme Court. Singh also alleged that Akhilesh Yadav had taken the Covid vaccine privately while misleading people during the vaccination drive. "Leaders like Akhilesh Yadav were quietly getting vaccine at home while misleading public," he said, adding India demonstrated its capacity in vaccine manufacturing and large-scale vaccination despite such statements....
