Varanasi, Aug. 13 -- Ghazipur police rescued 60 cattle, mostly cows, being smuggled from the Gahmar area toward Bihar via the Ganga River on Wednesday. The suspects were reportedly transporting the animals on two boats when local boatmen from Rampur Ghat spotted them. Following a 10-kilometre chase, the boatmen intercepted the vessels near Mubarakpur Ghat by ramming them. The smugglers subsequently jumped into the river and fled the scene. The boats drifted until the boatmen secured them and then alerted the police. Police arrived at the scene and took both boats into custody. The rescued cattle have since been moved to a shelter. During the interception, a boatman sustained injuries and has been admitted to the hospital. Superintendent of police (Rural) Atul Kumar Sonkar confirmed that all recovered cattle are safe. A case has been registered against unknown persons, and four teams have been formed to track down the suspects and identify the owners of the seized boats. While initial reports indicate the cattle were bound for Bihar, the specific point of origin remains under investigation....
