Gangster act invoked against nine cyber fraud accused in Varanasi
VARANASI, June 6 -- Police have invoked the Uttar Pradesh Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, 1986 against nine cyber crime accused in three separate cases in Varanasi.
Assistant commissioner of police (Cyber Crime) Vidush Saxena said the action was taken in May against organised cyber fraud gangs arrested earlier by the cyber crime cell.
In the first case, linked to a fraud of Rs.8.38 lakh from a Ramnagar resident, two accused were arrested from West Bengal. Police recovered mobile phones and Rs.1.52 lakh in cash. The accused allegedly used fake banking and RTO-related applications to gain access to victims' phones and withdraw money.
In the second case, five accused were arrested from Jharkhand. Police recovered mobile phones, SIM cards, forged documents, a vehicle and Rs.66,000 in cash. The gang allegedly used Trojan and SMS-forwarder APK files to access bank accounts.
In the third case, involving a fraud of Rs.20.16 lakh, two accused were arrested from Jharkhand and Bihar. They allegedly created fake websites of reputed companies and advertised franchise opportunities on social media. Police recovered 14 mobile phones, two laptops, forged documents, a Wi-Fi router and cash.
Saxena said strict action against organised cyber fraud networks would continue....
