PRAYAGRAJ, Sept. 7 -- Water levels of the Ganga and Yamuna continued to recede in Prayagraj for the second consecutive day on Sunday, bringing relief to residents of flood-affected areas as water gradually withdrew from low-lying localities. According to official data at 8 am, the Ganga fell 46 cm at Phaphamau and 17 cm at Chhatnag in 24 hours, while the Yamuna declined 11 cm at Naini and 7 cm at Bakshi Dam STP. All embankments remained safe, officials said. By 4 pm, the Ganga had fallen another 9 cm in eight hours, while the Yamuna receded by 1 cm. The city received intermittent rain over the past three days, with cloudy skies and occasional sunshine on Sunday. The Meteorological Department has forecast similar conditions over the next one to two days, with intermittent rain likely. ADM (finance and revenue) Vinita Singh advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant, saying the declining river levels indicate that the flood threat has reduced considerably.
