Haridwar, Sept. 16 -- Fresh landslides triggered by an ongoing wet spell in the region have damaged the fragile terrain on Mata Mansa Devi mountain near the Hill bypass in Haridwar district, district officials said on Tuesday. The revered Mata Mansa Devi shrine is located atop the hill, while the Har-ki-Pauri Ganga ghats and the colonialera Haridwar-Dehradun railway track lie below it. Officials said a major landslide took place on Monday afternoon and another was reported on Tuesday. A rivulet bridge caved in as a result of the landslide and a huge stretch of the road connecting the stairway to the shrine and the Hill bypass road. Officials said around 300 metres of the road was damaged. The damage has highlighted the vulnerability of the landslide-prone Shivalik terrain. A landslide at the same location last year necessitated repair and construction work. A team of technical experts also surveyed the affected portion in 2025 and recommended specialised technical treatment for the sensitive terrain. Earlier, in 2023, a 10-member team of the Uttarakhand Landslide Mitigation Management Centre had inspected the over five-kilometre-long stretch and identified over two dozen vulnerable spots. However, comprehensive treatment of the fragile terrain remains pending as the area falls under the forest department and Rajaji Tiger Reserve's jurisdiction. Clearance from the Union ministry of environment, forest and climate change to undertake full-scale treatment of the vulnerable stretch is currently pending. District magistrate Mayur Dixit said the latest landslide had prompted the administration to deploy JCB machines for clearing the affected area. "Landslide and caving in of a portion at Hill bypass has occurred, after which JCB machines have been pitched in for clearance. As it is majorly a sandstone and muddy terrain-based mountain terrain, it's quite vulnerable and sensitive. Along with the suggested treatment plan, we need also to ensure mass plantation, particularly of bamboo, to hold the muddy terrain," Dixit said.
