LUCKNOW, Sept. 11 -- Jailed Samajwadi Party veteran leader Mohammad Azam Khan is facing fresh legal trouble after the UP Vigilance Establishment registered a case over the alleged sale of a 60,000-square-foot Uttar Pradesh State Haj Committee plot in Lucknow, causing an estimated Rs.2.09-crore loss to the panel. A senior vigilance official said the FIR, registered by the Lucknow sector on September 8, names Azam Khan, former Haj Committee secretary Laik Ahmed, former secretary Dr MA Khan and two representatives of a private property firm-Mohammad Ayub and Muntazim Ahmed. The case follows a government-directed inquiry into the sale of the committee's land at Wazirbagh. According to the FIR, the property had been acquired for constructing a Haj House, but was sold in alleged violation of prescribed rules and conditions. The accused have been booked under provisions relating to cheating and criminal conspiracy, besides sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act dealing with bribery and criminal misconduct. The FIR alleges that the officials abused their positions and acted in concert with the private firm's representatives, causing a calculated loss of Rs.2,08,95,000 to the Haj Committee. A detailed inquiry report was submitted to the state government on February 8, 2026, following which the Vigilance Establishment registered the criminal case. The FIR comes as Khan remains in Sitapur jail following his conviction in the dual-PAN-card forgery case. In November 2025, a Rampur special MP/MLA court sentenced Khan and his son Abdullah Azam to seven years in prison and fined them Rs.50,000 each. Khan was sent back to jail barely two months after securing release following nearly two years in custody in other cases. In October 2023, Khan, his wife Tazeen Fatma and Abdullah were sentenced to seven years each in the case involving the alleged use of two birth certificates for Abdullah. The Allahabad high court later stayed Khan's conviction in the case while granting bail. The Haj Committee case marks a fresh line of investigation, focusing on an alleged financial loss to a government-linked institution and misuse of official position. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, while addressing media persons in Lucknow, said, "This government is committing all kinds of atrocities against him just to send a message. They razed a mosque within 12 hours of the judgement because they wanted to send a message. The BJP leaders are making derogatory statements against Azam Khan but no action was taken against them because they belong to the same caste as of the CM."...
