Kanpur, May 18 -- Four people returning from Bageshwar Dham were killed and a woman was critically injured after their car collided head-on with a dumper truck on the Kanpur-Sagar highway in Hamirpur district on Sunday afternoon, police said. The accident took place near Chhirka village under the Maudaha police station area. According to officials, the five-seater car was trying to overtake another vehicle when it moved into the opposite lane and crashed into the oncoming truck. Three of the deceased were identified as Raj Kapoor, 57, Narendra Kumar, 55, and Meena Dubey, 52, all residents of Nawabganj in Kanpur. The fourth victim, Ayush Chauhan, 25, who was driving the car, was a resident of Lucknow. Rekha, 52, suffered serious injuries in the crash. She was first taken to the community health centre and later referred to LLR Hospital in Kanpur for treatment. Police said the group was returning from Bageshwar Dham in Madhya Pradesh's Chhatarpur district, a religious site visited by thousands of devotees. Hamirpur district magistrate Abhishek Goyal and superintendent of police Mrigank Shekhar Pathak visited the accident site after the crash.
