PRAYAGRAJ, July 9 -- Four men, including two brothers, were killed after a truck rammed into a stationary pickup van on the Prayagraj-Kanpur National Highway (NH-19) in Kaushambi district in the early hours of Wednesday, police said. The accident took place around 1.30 am near Trilokpur village under the Saini police station limits, about 20 km from the district headquarters. Three victims died on the spot, while the fourth succumbed to injuries at the district hospital, officials shared. The deceased were identified as brothers Sabir Ali, 30, and Akbar Ali, 32, residents of Ward No. 10 in Sarai Akil under Saini police station, and puncture mechanics Anwar Hussain, 40, a resident of Muratganj in Sandipan Ghat police station area, and Ehsan Ullah, 42, a resident of Rasoolpur village under the Kokhraj police station. According to police, Sabir and Akbar, who manufactured and supplied traditional woven cots (charpoys), were transporting a consignment to Unnao in a pickup van when one of its tyres got punctured near Trilokpur on NH-19. They called two mechanics known to them for assistance. After reaching the spot, the mechanics parked the pickup by the roadside and started repairing the puncture while the two brothers illuminated the area using their mobile phone flashlights. A speeding truck then crashed into the stationary vehicle, throwing two men away while running over the other two before fleeing the scene. Eyewitness Iftikhar Ahmad, who runs a nearby shop, said they rushed to the spot after hearing the impact. "There was no lighting at the accident site and the entire stretch was in darkness. The truck driver may not have noticed the parked vehicle," he said. Circle officer, Sirathu, Satyendra Prasad Tiwari, said the truck driver fled with the vehicle after the accident. "All four injured were taken to the district hospital, where doctors declared them dead. A case has been registered against the unidentified truck driver on the complaint of the victims' kin. CCTV cameras installed in the vicinity are being examined to identify the vehicle and its driver," he said.
