PRAYAGRAJ, Sept. 28 -- The food safety and drug administration intensified its crackdown on adulterated and unsafe food products, conducting 1,598 inspections and 284 raids across the district between April and August. During the five-month period, officials collected 287 food samples and sent them to laboratories for testing. Of the 136 reports received so far, 57 samples failed to meet prescribed standards, a failure rate of about 42%. These included 46 substandard samples and 11 declared unsafe. In August alone, the department conducted 468 inspections and 111 raids and collected 111 samples. Of the reports received so far, one sample was found to be substandard. Assistant commissioner (Food Safety-II) Dinanath said enforcement drives would continue to ensure the availability of safe food and beverages to the public. He said prosecution proceedings under the Food Safety and Standards Act were being initiated against food business operators whose products failed to meet stipulated standards. Between April and August, 295 cases were filed, including 257 before the ADM court and 38 before the judicial court. The ADM court disposed of 40 cases in August, bringing the total number of cases decided during the period to 145. Records showed that total fines of Rs.1.08 crore were imposed between April and August, including Rs.33.15 lakh in August alone....
