PRAYAGRAJ, Sept. 6 -- The flood situation in Prayagraj showed signs of improvement on Saturday as water levels in Ganga and Yamuna receded for the second time, after rising continuously for more than three days due to heavy rainfall. But authorities remained on alert, anticipating a possible rise in river levels because of ongoing rainfall in neighbouring regions. According to the flood control room, water levels in both rivers fell by 30 cm to 47 cm during the past 24 hours. Despite the decline, flooding affected low-lying areas in many villages, forcing residents to seek shelter in relief camps. So far, 220 people from 52 families had been shifted to flood relief centres in the Sadar, Karchana and Meja tehsils. Officials said the number could increase as more flood-affected families may move to safer locations. At 8am on Saturday, the Ganga's water level at Phaphamau was recorded at 82.72 metres, 30 cm lower than the previous day. The Yamuna at Naini stood at 82.06 metres, registering a decline of 42 cm, while the Ganga at Chhatnag fell by 47 cm to 81.59 metres. The water level near the STP at Bakshi Bandh was recorded at 82.14 metres, down 44 cm in 24 hours. Officials said water levels at all monitoring stations remained below the danger mark and all embankments were safe. The district administration had deployed 23 boats and five motorboats across affected areas. Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were also stationed to assist residents and carry out rescue operations, if required. In Phulpur tehsil, seven boats were deployed in Badra Sonauti village and three in Uparhar village. In Karchana tehsil, one boat each was stationed in Kachari Panasa, Dhathsara, Khapatia, Lakshipur and Katka villages. One boat had been deployed in Dati village under Sadar tehsil. In Bara tehsil, two motorboats each were stationed in Lonipar and Singhpur villages. In Meja tehsil, boats were provided in Isauta, Ariyari Barsaita and Amilia villages, while in Koraon tehsil two boats had been deployed in Devghat village and one in Bhogan village. A total of 22 villages across the district were affected by flooding. These included one in Sadar tehsil, four in Meja tehsil, two in Koraon tehsil, four in Phulpur tehsil, five in Karchana tehsil besides six villages in Bara tehsil. The administration also set up 97 relief camps for displaced residents. In Sadar tehsil, 25 families comprising 90 people were staying at a relief camp. In another camp in Karchana, 12 families with 30 members had been shifted. Likewise, reports made available by ADM (finance and revenue) Vinita Singh, who is also nodal officer of flood relief operations, showed that in Meja tehsil, 15 families comprising 100 people, had taken refuge at a relief camp where cooked meals were being provided by the administration. Additionally, around 80 flood-affected residents living near Draupadi Ghat in Sadar tehsil had chosen to remain in their homes and were being supplied with food by the administration. After nearly a week of continuous rainfall, Prayagraj experienced a respite as rains remained absent for the past two days. The weather remained largely clear on Saturday with intermittent sunshine. The Meteorological Department indicated that weather conditions could change, making rainfall possible in the coming days. Despite the decline in river levels, the impact of flooding continued to be visible across Prayagraj's riverfront as major ghats, including Daraganj Ghat, remain submerged. As a result, last rites were being performed on the main road leading to the Sangam. People arriving from Prayagraj, neighbouring districts and other states to perform final rituals were facing delays due to waterlogging and the lack of access to the ghats....
