First photographic record of endangered bird at Katarniaghat
LUCKNOW, April 1 -- Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary's (KWS) first photographic record of the Indian Grassbird, an endangered species, has been claimed by an IRS officer Raghav Gupta.
The picture was taken recently while on a safari in the Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary in Bahraich.
"I heard a distinctive scratchy churring call, characteristic of the Indian grassbird. Upon pausing I scanned the reedbed where the call continued. Better visibility through the camera lens confirmed the visual identification of the bird," said the officer.
The bird was flitting in the lower levels of the grasses and is a known skulker. The bird's churrs gave way to low-pitched rattling calls. Both
sounds were recorded and photographs were taken which confirmed the bird to be Indian Grassbird, likely to be KWS's (and Bahraich city's) first photographic record, he said....
