Dehradun, Aug. 26 -- Udham Singh Nagar police registered a first information report (FIR) against Congress leader and former MLA Rajkumar Thukral after an altercation with BJP's sitting Rudrapur MLA Shiv Arora during a review meeting on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls at the Rudrapur collectorate on Monday. The FIR was registered under Section 221 (obstructing a public servant in discharge of public functions) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Pantnagar police station late Monday night on a complaint by an Election Commission official. The meeting was chaired by Kumaon commissioner Deepak Rawat. According to people present at the meeting, Arora and former Kichha MLA Rajesh Shukla alleged that Congress leaders and workers were threatening BJP workers who had filed objections during the SIR process. Thukral reportedly objected to the allegations and challenged the BJP leaders to name those allegedly involved. The argument soon escalated into a heated exchange, disrupting the meeting. District magistrate Nitin Bhadoria and other officials attempted to pacify the two leaders, but the confrontation continued. Abusive language was also allegedly exchanged. Commissioner Rawat intervened to calm the two sides before leaving the meeting hall, following which the meeting was cancelled. BJP workers later staged a dharna at the collectorate, demanding action against Thukral. Arora also joined the protest. Pantnagar station house officer (SHO) Nandan Singh Bisht said, "We have registered the FIR and our investigation into the matter is underway." In a Facebook post, Thukral alleged that the incident was part of a conspiracy to create chaos during the meeting. He also claimed that there was a plan to kill him outside the district magistrate's office through shooters allegedly associated with a person convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. "However, as soon as my associates came to know about the plan, they arrived there in large numbers," he said. "I will not be afraid. I will fight. I am a Uttarakhand movement activist," Thukral said. Thukral, a former BJP MLA, joined the Congress in March this year. He had quit the BJP after being denied a ticket to contest the 2022 assembly elections from the Rudrapur seat in Udham Singh Nagar.
