New Delhi, Sept. 9 -- The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the Centre to ensure appointment to all tribunals under the newly enacted Tribunals Reforms Act 2026 is carried out at the earliest after the government said that 248 members currently serving in 16 tribunals were found eligible to continue in service. The bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant said, "We are concerned about the practical aspect that the tribunal will become defunct during the transitional period." To ensure the day-to-day functioning of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) is not affected, the court directed the Centre to extend the tenure of three members - two judicial and one technical expert - till such time the new appointment to their posts under the 2026 act is made....
