PRAYAGRAJ, Aug. 7 -- A 48-year-old farmer was allegedly beaten to death while guarding his paddy field in the trans-Ganga region of Prayagraj's Meja area on Wednesday night. Police suspect the killing was the result of a long-standing land dispute. The deceased, Premchandra Yadav, a resident of Bairahna village under the Kohdar police outpost, had gone to guard his paddy crop, located about half a kilometre from his house, around 10 pm on Wednesday. His body was found on the field embankment on Thursday morning with multiple grievous head and body injuries, police said. According to his son, Ajit Kumar Yadav, he had gone to the field at night to call his father home for dinner. "He asked me to return home, saying he would come back shortly, but he never returned," Ajit told police. In his complaint, Ajit named four villagers-Pappu, son of Molai; Guddu, son of Pappu; and Pappu's two brothers-as the accused. Acting on the complaint, police registered an FIR and sent the body to Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital for a postmortem after completing the necessary legal formalities. Family members alleged that the accused had been trying to grab the disputed agricultural land and had previously damaged the standing paddy crop after Premchandra refused to give up possession. They claimed the accused attacked him with sticks and sharp-edged weapons when he objected to their attempt to uproot the crop during the night....
