Meerut, July 12 -- The abduction and murder of a Dalit girl student in Meerut has led to large-scale protests even as political activity continues to intensify over the issue. Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav has questioned the UP government and police action in the case, while former MLA Sangeet Som visited the victim's family and promised legal and financial support. On Saturday morning, the victim's family met Akhilesh Yadav at Delhi airport where Kairana MP Iqra Hasan was also present. Following the meeting, Yadav shared photographs on social media and raised questions over the handling of the case. According to the police, 20-year-old Dalit student went missing from the TP Nagar area on May 15 and her body was recovered in the Rohta area on May 17. The main accused was arrested on May 18, while another person was later arrested for allegedly destroying evidence. He also alleged that the Uttar Pradesh government had failed to ensure the safety of women and deliver justice. Meanwhile, former MLA Sangeet Som visited the victim's family on Saturday and assured them of all possible support. He said justice would be ensured for the student at all costs and announced financial assistance to help the family pay a lawyer's fees to pursue the case. Som described the deceased student as "a daughter of the entire society" and stressed that those responsible for the crime must face the harshest punishment. He assured the family that the government stood firmly with them and that every possible step would be taken to secure justice. He said the government would pursue the case vigorously to ensure that the accused were brought to justice and faced the death penalty. Som said if the investigation revealed negligence on the part of any officer or employee, action should be taken against them. He appealed to the family not to allow the case to be politicised and accused the Samajwadi Party and its leaders of attempting to turn the tragedy into a political issue. The former MLA urged people to have faith in the police and the investigation process....
