Fake IPS officer held for coercing woman to settle criminal case
LUCKNOW, June 26 -- The Kakori police arrested a 21-year-old man for allegedly impersonating senior police officers and threatening a woman with suspension from her job in an attempt to coerce her into settling a criminal case, officials said on Thursday.
According to police, the accused, identified as Abhishek Upadhyay, a resident of Jaunpur currently staying in Lucknow's Bhaisora area, allegedly made calls and sent messages to the complainant while posing as the Inspector General (IG) of Patna and the SP City of Prayagraj.
Police said the woman, who is the complainant in a case registered at Para police station, informed the investigating officer that she had been receiving repeated calls from different mobile numbers.
During these conversations, the caller allegedly claimed to be a senior police officer and pressured her to compromise in the case, warning of suspension from service and other adverse consequences if she refused.
"Taking cognisance of the complaint, the Kakori police launched an inquiry with assistance from the surveillance cell. Through technical analysis and location tracking of the mobile numbers used in the calls, investigators identified Upadhyay as the alleged caller," stated a Lucknow police press note.
He was subsequently arrested by the police team. During interrogation, police said, the accused admitted to posing as senior police officers to exert pressure on the complainant and mentally harass her into agreeing to a settlement in the ongoing legal proceedings....
