Facing shortage, KGMU urges A+, AB+ group people to donate blood
LUCKNOW, March 1 -- The King George's Medical University (KGMU) is facing a severe shortage of A+ and AB+ blood groups, according to the medical university's transfusion medicine department. In view of the crisis, an appeal has been made to people with the said groups to come forward and donate blood. The KGMU caters to patients from across Uttar Pradesh.
The availability of 200 units of A+ blood group and at least 100 to 150 units of AB+ blood group per day is considered the bare minimum. At least these numbers should be in stock to handle the daily load at the centre.
"But, currently we have just 50 units of A+ blood group and 20 units of AB+, which is a very low number at a centre like KGMU," said Dr. Tulika Chandra, head of the transfusion medicine department.
"The blood bank is open round the clock, especially for emergencies, and we request donors to visit at their convenience," said Dr Chandra. "Regular voluntary blood donation stimulates bone marrow to produce healthy red blood cells and can reduce the risk of heart attack by 5%," a press release shared with the media on Saturday quoted Dr Chandra as saying.
