LUCKNOW, Aug. 30 -- Deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak on Saturday directed health officials to extend the duty hours of doctors and medical staff, if required, in view of rising swine flu cases and the heavy patient load. Hospitals were also asked to prepare duty rosters and ensure strict compliance. In districts with a high disease burden, separate registration counters and OPD rooms should be arranged for patients with cough and fever symptoms, the advisory said. Medical staff treating influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) patients should follow infection-control measures, including wearing masks and frequent handwashing. All admitted SARI patients must be tested for H1N1, while those with high clinical suspicion, symptomatic contacts and clinically diagnosed cases should receive prompt antiviral treatment. Hospitals were directed to maintain adequate stocks of oseltamivir and bronchodilators and ensure functional oxygen systems, nebulisers, concentrators and cylinders.
