GORAKHPUR, Oct. 4 -- Former Samajwadi Party district president Ram Nagina Sahani was allegedly slapped by people accompanying senior party leader Anshuman Singh during a press conference in Gorakhpur on Saturday. Following this, the SP expelled Singh for alleged indiscipline. The expulsion came hours after a dispute over seating arrangements at the Gorakhpur Journalists' Press Club escalated into a physical confrontation involving Sahani and Singh's supporters. The incident took place during a press conference organised to publicise the SP's 'Save Democracy Week'. The SP office memorandum, signed by Arvind Kumar Singh of the party's national executive, stated that Singh, a resident of Padleganj in Gorakhpur, had been expelled from the party for indiscipline. The press conference had been convened by district president Brijesh Gautam to brief the media about the party's programmes under 'Loktantra Bachao Saptah' (Save Democracy Week). The dispute began when people accompanying Singh attempted to occupy front-row seats already occupied by party leader and actress Kajal Nishad and others. Sahani was also seated in the front row with former party secretary Sanjay Pehalwan and other leaders when an argument broke out over rearranging the chairs. The argument soon escalated into a heated exchange and physical confrontation. Party leaders and others present intervened to separate the two sides, following which the press conference continued. Sahani alleged that people accompanying Singh forced him to vacate his seat, assaulted him and threatened him. He said he would approach the police and bring the matter to the attention of the party leadership. Earlier in the day, Nishad Party chief and Uttar Pradesh minister Dr Sanjay Nishad had given the SP 24 hours to register an FIR and act against those allegedly involved in the assault on Sahani, who is from the Nishad community. He had also asked SP chief Akhilesh Yadav to intervene and warned that Nishad Party workers would gherao the SP office if the party failed to act....
