LUCKNOW, June 26 -- The Uttar Pradesh Economic Offences Wing (EOW) has arrested the director of two companies accused of duping investors of around Rs.14 crore through unauthorised deposit schemes. Officials said that the accused was held from Kharagpur in West Bengal after remaining on the run for several years. The accused, Rohit Kumar Upadhyay, a resident of Kheria Bazar in Bankati area of Basti district, was wanted in a case registered at Alambagh police station in Lucknow under IPC sections 409, 420, 467, 468, 471 and 120B, the EOW said in a press note issued on Thursday. According to the agency, the case relates to M/s Pears Allied Corporation Limited and M/s Dpears Allied Corporation Limited, companies registered with the registrar of companies in Delhi-Haryana and Kanpur, respectively. Investigators alleged that the companies' key functionaries, including CMD Durga Prasad Dubey, other directors and employees, mobilised public deposits without obtaining registration from the Reserve Bank of India as a non-banking financial company. The EOW alleged that investors were lured into depositing money in schemes such as RD (IBP) and FD (SIP) on the promise of doubling or tripling their money in a short period. To gain their confidence, the accused allegedly issued forged bonds and receipts, the agency said. Officials said that after collecting money from investors, the company allegedly shut its offices in Lucknow, Bijnor and other places and disappeared with around Rs.14 crore belonging to the complainant and other depositors. The EOW said that during investigation, evidence surfaced pointing to Upadhyay's alleged involvement as a director of the company. Efforts had been on for a long time to trace and arrest him, and Bihar Police was also looking for him in connection with other matters, the agency said.
