VARANASI, Oct. 10 -- District magistrate Satyendra Kumar and police commissioner Mohit Agarwal chaired a peace committee meeting to ensure the smooth and safe conduct of Durga Puja and Dussehra celebrations. Organisers of various Durga Puja and Ramlila committees across the district attended the meeting, during which officials sought information from committee office-bearers about celebrations in previous years. The suggestions and concerns raised by organisers were also heard, following which officials of the concerned departments, along with DCPs, ACPs and station house officers (SHOs), were directed to take necessary action. Organisers flagged issues such as dilapidated electricity poles and sagging wires, and sought pothole repairs on routes leading to idol installation and immersion sites, besides better lighting arrangements. DM Kumar directed the executive engineers of the electricity department and the PWD officials to address issues immediately and asked the PWD, municipal corporation, and district panchayat to expedite road repairs. He also directed the Jal Kal Department to ensure the supply of clean drinking water and mobile toilets wherever needed. The municipal corporation was tasked with cleanliness at urban pandals, immersion sites and water bodies, while the District Panchayati Raj Officer was asked to oversee sanitation in rural areas. Organisers were asked to arrange emergency lights and generators at Durga Puja pandals. The district magistrate said idol immersion must be held only in water bodies with sufficient water, without introducing new traditions. He directed departments to ensure cleanliness, clear undergrowth and provide adequate lighting along immersion routes. Organisers were also urged to conduct Ravan Dahan peacefully and celebrate the festivals with reverence and devotion. Police commissioner Mohit Agarwal asked ACPs and SHOs to hold coordination meetings with committee organisers. He directed police to ensure immersion processions did not block entire roads, maintain heightened security, deploy women personnel at Ramlila venues and fairs, and arrange adequate force for traffic and crowd management....
