Elephant census starts from May 26 in Corbett
Rudrapur, May 16 -- Scientific counting of elephants in the Corbett Tiger Reserve (CTR) will be conducted from May 26 to June 30, forest officials said on Friday.
In preparation for the exercise, a training session has already been organised for forest officers and personnel of the Kumaon zone to familiarise them with the scientific methods of elephant census.
CTR Director and Coordination Officer for the counting, Saket Badola, said that the Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun, had shared a detailed action plan for conducting the elephant census in Uttarakhand on May 8. "The research team of WII will begin the counting process from May 26," he said.
Researchers from WII, including Mukesh Chandra, has imparted training to the forest staff on scientific counting techniques. The session covered methods of field data collection, transect surveys, and the use of modern technologies, along with counting based on direct and indirect evidence of elephant presence.
Officials said the census will be conducted beat-wise over five days using the M-STrIPES ecology application. The collected data will subsequently be transferred to WII for analysis....
