Elephant census begins in corbett and Lachiwala forest ranges
Haldwani/Haridwar, May 27 -- Haldwani/HaridwarThe elephant census in Corbett National Park commenced on Tuesday and will continue till May 30, while a similar month-long exercise also began in the Lachiwala forest range, forest officials said.
According to Saket Badola, director, Corbett National Park, around 150 forest personnel have been deployed for the exercise to assess the elephant population and monitor movement patterns across the park's 72 forest beats.
"The elephant census began on May 26 and will continue till May 30. Prior to the commencement of the census, forest staff underwent specialised training to ensure greater accuracy in data collection," said Dr Saket Badola.
He added that the census is being conducted using scientific methodology with technical support from the Wildlife Institute of India (WII).
"Separate teams have been constituted for each range, comprising forest personnel as well as researchers from the Wildlife Institute of India. These teams will prepare detailed records of elephant activities, movement patterns, herd sizes and habitat zones," he said.
Meanwhile, the elephant census in the Lachiwala forest range along the Dehradun-Haridwar-Rishikesh corridor also commenced on Tuesday and will continue till June 30.
"Experts from the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun have provided detailed training to forest personnel for the elephant census, covering scientific, traditional, manual and on-field aspects, " said Lachiwala Range Officer Meghavi Keerti.
Officials said the census would help assess elephant population, behavioural patterns and changes in movement corridors caused by increasing human activities....
