Elderly man shot dead in Deoband village; old rivalry suspected
MEERUT, June 14 -- A 70-year-old man was shot dead late Friday night in Nanhera Aasa village under Deoband town in Saharanpur district, triggering tension in the area and prompting heavy police deployment.
The accused allegedly used the victim's licenced firearm to carry out the murder before fleeing from the scene, said police.
The deceased was identified as Jaipal Singh, a resident of Nanhera Aasa village.
According to police and locals, Singh was sitting in his enclosure late at night when a neighbour allegedly arrived and opened fire on him using Jaipal's licenced gun.
The bullet struck Singh, causing him to collapse on the spot. He succumbed to his injuries, leaving villagers shocked and enraged.
The accused fled with the licenced weapon. As the news of the killing spread, a large number of villagers gathered at the scene and staged a protest, demanding swift action against the culprit.
Senior police officials rushed to the village along with police force. Officers held discussions with villagers, assured them of strict action, and managed to bring the situation under control.
According to local residents, the victim's family and the accused's family live opposite each other and have been embroiled in a long-standing rivalry and dispute over local dominance. Investigators believe this enmity may have been the motive behind the murder. DSP Abhitesh Singh said all angles of the case are being thoroughly investigated. Multiple teams have been formed to trace and arrest the absconding accused.
"The perpetrator will be apprehended soon and strict action will be taken in accordance with the law," he said....
