Eight arrested, two juveniles detained in hookah bar raid
PRAYAGRAJ, Aug. 27 -- Police raided an alleged hookah bar operating from Kajuja Restaurant in the Naini area of Prayagraj late on Tuesday night. Eight people were arrested and two juveniles were detained during the operation.
The action was taken after police received specific information that tobacco-based hookah was being served and consumed at the establishment. A team from Naini police station conducted the raid and found several people allegedly smoking hookah on the premises.
According to police, the arrested accused were taken into custody. Two juveniles, aged 17 and 15, were also found at the spot and detained in accordance with legal procedures.
During the raid, police recovered a large quantity of hookah equipment and tobacco products. These included 14 hookahs, three hookah pipes, 17 chillums (hookah bowls), one electric heater, 14 plastic pipes, one pair of tongs, 29 sealed packets of flavoured tobacco, five open containers of flavoured tobacco, one electronic weighing scale, one hookah blower and one open box of charcoal. The seized items have been taken into possession as evidence.
Following the raid, police registered a case at Naini police station under provisions of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) and other relevant sections applicable to the case.
Officials said the investigation was continuing to establish the role of the restaurant management and whether the hookah bar had been operating illegally for a long period.
