Ed searches nine sites in mizoram in smuggling areca nut racket
New Delhi, June 5 -- The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has conducted searches at nine locations in Mizoram's Champhai area along the Myanmar border in connection with a probe into the large-scale smuggling of illegal Burmese dry areca nuts into India, officials said on Thursday.
The raids were carried out on Tuesday morning with the help of Mizoram police, the officials added. "This major crackdown targets a highly organised cross-border network heavily involved in the large-scale smuggling of dry areca nuts into India. The ongoing raids focus primarily on the residences and business premises of prominent local facilitators of the smuggling network," said an ED official, requesting anonymity.
ED's initial probe, the official said, has revealed that these individuals "illegally brought in Myanmar-origin consignments via the Tiu River, stored them in local godowns, and used fraudulent e-way bills and forged documents to pass them off as legitimate local purchases."...
