E-rickshaw driver killed as 60-ft tree falls on him in Sambhal
MEERUT, Oct. 10 -- An e-rickshaw driver was killed when a nearly 60-foot-tall tree fell on him as he took shelter from a storm accompanied by heavy rain and hail in Asmoli village of Sambhal district on Friday afternoon, police said.
The incident occurred around 2.30 pm at Dharamshala Adda in Asmoli village, where Bholu Singh, 50, son of Ramchandra Singh, had stopped his e-rickshaw under a tree to take shelter from the inclement weather. Strong winds uprooted the nearly 60-foot-tall tree, crushing the vehicle and killing him on the spot.
Police and administrative officials reached the scene after receiving information about the accident. Three JCB machines and a Hydra machine were deployed to remove the fallen tree and retrieve Singh's body.
After nearly an hour and 15 minutes of rescue efforts, the body was recovered.
The police subsequently took the body to a community health centre, where doctors declared him dead. The police have taken custody of the body and initiated post-mortem proceedings.
The incident drew a large crowd, with approximately 400 to 500 people gathering at the spot as news of the accident spread.
Rescuers had to make considerable efforts to reach Singh, who remained trapped beneath the fallen tree.
After receiving information, his family rushed to the hospital.
Deputy superintendent of police Aman Singh said the e-rickshaw driver died after being trapped beneath the fallen tree. He said the police had taken custody of the body and initiated the necessary legal proceedings, including the post-mortem process....
