PRAYAGRAJ, Sept. 19 -- Deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on Friday hit back at Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge over their remarks concerning the lighting of a 'Ashirwad Ka Diya' on PM Narendra Modi's birthday on Thursday. His remarks came in response to the Congress leaders' reported comments that the "BJP should light a lamp of forgiveness instead of a lamp of blessings". "Leaders of different countries and people from across the country are extending their wishes and lighting lamps of blessings on the PM's birthday. If the Congress cannot digest even this, may God grant them wisdom," Maurya said while talking to reporters. On Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav's remark questioning how lamps could be lit when there was "darkness in people's lives," Maurya said that people's lives were in darkness during the SP government. He said the power supply situation had improved considerably under the BJP government in both cities and villages. The deputy CM said that during the SP regime, power supply was so poor that people used to dry clothes on electricity wires. Maurya also responded to Rahul Gandhi's allegations concerning the purported freezing of the Trinamool Congress's symbol and bank accounts ahead of by-elections in West Bengal.
