GORAKHPUR, Aug. 20 -- Four youths were killed after their motorcycle was crushed by a speeding dumper near Damki village on the Nichlaul-Maharajganj highway late Tuesday evening. The incident sparked a protest on Wednesday morning, as grieving family members and hundreds of villagers blocked the road, demanding financial compensation and government support. The victims were identified as Sunny, 22, Shiva, 18, Vivek, 20, and Santosh, 19. All four were relatives; Shiva and Vivek were siblings. According to police, the youths were traveling to attend a birthday celebration on a single motorcycle when the collision occurred. The impact was reportedly severe enough that the motorcycle and its riders were dragged for nearly 10 metres. On Wednesday, the protest began around 9:00 am, causing a significant traffic jam for nearly four hours. The families demanded Rs.1 crore in compensation for each of the deceased, government jobs for one member of each family, and additional financial assistance. Nichlaul station house officer (SHO) Yogendra Kumar Rai arrived at the scene to negotiate with the crowd, but protesters refused to clear the highway until their demands were addressed. The situation was resolved only after Nichlaul SDM Siddharth Gupta and Tehsildar Amit Kumar arrived to hold talks with the families. Officials assured the protesters that their demands would be forwarded to the appropriate authorities and that relief would be considered according to government guidelines. Following these assurances, the families submitted a memorandum and ended the blockade, allowing traffic flow to resume.Police have sent the bodies for post-mortem examinations and are currently investigating the circumstances of the crash. SHO Rai stated that authorities are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to determine the sequence of events and identify the driver responsible.
