Lakhimpur Kheri, July 16 -- Four captive elephants at the Dudhwa Tiger Reserve (DTR) --Nakul, Gajraj, Bhaskar and Vinayak-- underwent tusk trimming on Tuesday after their unusually long tusks began hindering movement and feeding. A team of veterinarians led by Dr Mohd Talha of Dudhwa and Dr Deepak Kumar of Katarniaghat carried out the procedure under prescribed guidelines. Deputy director Jagdish R., forest officials and mahouts were present. Field director Dr H. Rajamohan said permission had been obtained from the Uttar Pradesh chief wildlife warden as elephants are protected under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act. The trimmed tusks were catalogued and kept in safe custody as per SOP and will be destroyed under rules.
