DU student gangrape: 2 accused surrender
LUCKNOW, May 31 -- Two men accused in the alleged gangrape of a Delhi University student in Lucknow's Sushant Golf City area earlier this month surrendered before a court on Saturday. Police said they will seek custodial remand of the accused, while efforts are underway to trace a third suspect. According to police, the two accused, identified as Shivam Yadav and Shani, surrendered before the court and were subsequently sent to judicial custody. Confirming it, additional deputy commissioner of police (South) Vasanth Rallapalli said police would seek their remand for questioning.
"Efforts to identify and apprehend the remaining accused are continuing," he added. Police said Shivam Yadav's father is an advocate practising at the Allahabad high court in Prayagraj, while co-accused Shani works as a delivery executive in Lucknow.
The case came to light after a 20-year-old woman from Jaunpur alleged that she was sexually assaulted by three men after being taken to a rented room in Sushant Golf City earlier this month. Police said the complainant, a DU student, travelled from her hometown on May 15 to Delhi. She alleged that after boarding a train, she contacted her acquaintance Shivam Yadav.
According to the FIR, Yadav met her at Charbagh railway station and she was served coffee laced with an intoxicating substance, after which she lost consciousness and was sexually assaulted. She further alleged that Yadav later allowed two others to sexually assault her.
The complainant told police that when her condition deteriorated, the accused allegedly put her on a train with a general ticket. During the journey, she informed her parents about the incident over the phone, following which the family approached the police....
