LUCKNOW, Aug. 20 -- The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has busted an alleged syndicate involved in the illegal trade of ivory artefacts, intercepting four members of the network and seizing 54 intricately carved ivory pieces during an operation in Lucknow on Wednesday. Acting on specific intelligence about the illicit trade in ivory artefacts, DRI officers mounted a "meticulously planned" operation in Lucknow on Wednesday and intercepted four persons allegedly involved in the trafficking of wildlife articles, according to a DRI press release. The seizure comprised animal and human figurines, decorative articles and other ornamental pieces. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials said the recovered items were finely detailed and could have substantial commercial and antique value. The operation has provided DRI investigators with a potentially significant lead into the illegal trade in ivory and the network allegedly involved in procuring and dealing in such artefacts. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials said the seizure was particularly significant as the trade in elephant ivory remains prohibited under Indian law. The Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, prohibits trade and commerce in elephant ivory and articles manufactured from it. The restrictions are also linked to India's international commitments under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which regulates international trade in endangered wildlife and their products.
