LUCKNOW, Sept. 7 -- A private double-decker bus carrying 32 passengers from Gorakhpur to Surat caught fire near Medanta Hospital in Sushant Golf City on Saturday night after its rear axle reportedly broke. All passengers were evacuated safely and no casualties were reported, authorities said on Sunday. According to transport officials, the bus was passing through the area when its rear axle reportedly broke, causing a tyre to rub against the road and catch fire. Driver Rahul Patel, who had left Gorakhpur around 5 pm for Surat, heard a loud sound from the rear of the vehicle and immediately pulled over. All passengers were evacuated before the fire engulfed the bus. During a preliminary inspection, the transport department found that the bus's pollution certificate had expired, according to the officials. Assistant regional transport officer (ARTO) (Enforcement) Prabhat Pandey said the department was not planning a special enforcement drive specifically after the incident, citing a shortage of enforcement personnel who are already engaged in several official duties and ongoing drives. "Enforcement against sleeper and double-decker buses is carried out from time to time, and action is taken whenever violations are detected. However, manpower remains a major constraint for conducting a dedicated drive," Pandey said....
