Docs use mobile torch amidblackout to treat stroke patient
KANPUR, April 25 -- A stroke patient was treated in near darkness at a government district hospital in Fatehpur on Wednesday night, as a power outage and a non-functional generator left doctors relying on a mobile phone torch.
The patient was brought in by his brother, Manish Dubey, after suffering a stroke. On arrival, Dubey found the emergency ward unlit due to the outage, and the backup generator had not been activated. A doctor inserted a cannula into the patient's hand using the torchlight. Dubey recorded the procedure on his phone and shared the video online, where it quickly spread.
Dr Rajesh Kumar, the hospital's chief medical superintendent, offered no defence. Staff should have reported the power failure through proper channels, but failed to do so, he said. He added that an inquiry would be conducted into why the generator was not started and assured corrective action.
