Despite big win, UP women's fail to make the cut
LUCKNOW, Nov. 7 -- Varnika Singh and Deepti Sharma shared an unbeaten 106-run opening partnership as Uttar Pradesh demolished Uttarakhand by 10 wickets in their final Group D league match of the Senior Women's T20 Trophy Elite at the MCA Cricket Stadium in Gahunje, Pune, on Friday.
Chasing 106, Uttar Pradesh cruised to 106 for no loss in just 12.3 overs, sealing victory with 45 balls to spare.
Despite the emphatic win, however, they missed out on a knockout berth on Net Run Rate, with Delhi and Mumbai progressing from the group. Delhi finished top with 20 points and an NRR of +1.695, Mumbai second on 16 points at +1.866, while Uttar Pradesh's 16 points came with an NRR of +0.967.
Put in to bat, Uttarakhand's innings unravelled early. Captain Raghvi Bist fell for 3 off the fourth ball of the second over, and Kareena soon followed as the side slumped to 9 for 2 within three overs.
Sona tried to steady the ship with a patient 32 off 40 balls, laced with three fours, while Neelam Bhardwaj offered brief resistance with a brisk 23 from 19 deliveries.
But once Bhardwaj was bowled by Khushi Tyagi to leave Uttarakhand at 58 for 3 in the 11th over, the innings lost its way.
Sona retired out shortly after the halfway stage, triggering a cascade of wickets. Archana Devi led the attack superbly with 3 for 16 in three overs, while Tyagi picked up 2 for 21. Arju Singh and Deepti Sharma took a wicket each, conceding just 17 runs apiece from their four overs.
Uttarakhand were eventually bowled out for 105 in 20 overs at a run rate of 5.25, with Sweta Verma's 18 off 15 the only other meaningful contribution. Their last five wickets fell for a mere 47 runs, reflecting the sustained pressure from Uttar Pradesh's disciplined bowling unit.
The chase was utterly one-sided. Varnika Singh made 46 off 35 balls at a strike rate of 131, striking seven fours, while captain Deepti Sharma finished unbeaten on 53 from 40 deliveries at 133, hitting four boundaries and three sixes.
The unbroken 106-run stand ensured Uttar Pradesh overhauled the target with ease. Varnika kept the scoreboard ticking early with fluent strokeplay before Deepti shifted gears decisively to finish the job in emphatic fashion.
Uttarakhand's bowlers had no answers. Prema Rawat was the most expensive, conceding 20 in her only over, while Amisha Bahukhandi, Safina Aziz, Nisha Mishra and Pooja Raj all went wicketless. Neelam Bhardwaj was the most economical, giving away just 11 in two overs, but the opening partnership remained unbroken....
