Demo car goes out of control, hits pedestrians, vehicles
LUCKNOW, May 17 -- A speeding car, reportedly belonging to a commercial vehicle showroom in Indira Nagar, went out of control and ploughed into commuters in Lucknow's Ghazipur police station area on Saturday afternoon, injuring multiple people, including a couple and their child, police said.
"At SBD intersection, a demo vehicle driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with several vehicles, resulting in 03 people injured.
The injured have been admitted to Lohia Hospital for treatment.
The vehicle has been seized by the police, and further legal action is being taken," read a Lucknow police statement.
The accident took place around 4.30pm near Bhootnath market when the car was being driven towards the workshop or showroom.
Eyewitnesses said the hatchback continued hitting vehicles and pedestrians for nearly 100 metres before jumping into the opposite lane and crashing into an SUV, finally coming to a halt.
The impact damaged at least six two-wheelers and two four-wheelers.
Police identified the woman driving the car as Sushma Sunhar, an employee associated with the showroom.
Two male employees who were also inside the vehicle allegedly fled the scene immediately after the crash, while the woman remained and was questioned by police.
Ashish Verma, whose vehicle was hit by the car, said he noticed the speeding car in his rear-view mirror moments before the collision.
"I was heading back towards my shop after dropping a colleague. I saw the car swerving at high speed behind me and tried to move aside, but it rammed into my vehicle from behind," he said.
He added that the car kept moving recklessly after the initial impact, knocking down whoever came in its path before crashing into the SUV..
Another eyewitness, Avinash Pandey, a resident of Bijnaur, said he was at a nearby cafe when he heard a loud crash.
"When we came outside, we saw the car had smashed into several vehicles.
All its airbags had deployed. Many people appeared injured," he said.
Police rushed the injured to nearby hospitals and began examining CCTV footage from the area to ascertain the sequence of events.
Officials said the exact cause of the accident - whether mechanical failure, human error or rash driving - is being investigated....
