PRAYAGRAJ, Aug. 14 -- The demand to rename Swaroop Rani Nehru (SRN) Divisional Hospital, affiliated with Moti Lal Nehru Medical College (MLNMC), after Kakori martyr Amar Shaheed Thakur Roshan Singh gathered momentum on Thursday as an indefinite sit-in entered its ninth consecutive day in Prayagraj. The protest, being held under the banner of the Mahua Dabar Museum family, has drawn support from descendants of freedom fighters, students, youths, and local residents. Protesters have warned that if their demand remains unaddressed, they will take the agitation to the streets with broader public participation. Shah Alam Rana, founder of the Mahua Dabar Museum in Basti district and a leading voice behind the movement, said the SRN Hospital stands on the site of the erstwhile Malaka Jail, where Thakur Roshan Singh, one of the heroes of the Kakori Conspiracy Case, was executed by the British on December 19, 1927. According to Rana, Roshan Singh spent nearly eight months in a death cell located close to the gallows in the southern section of the prison before embracing martyrdom. He said the revolutionary walked to the gallows with a smile and made the supreme sacrifice for the country's freedom. "Since the hospital now stands on the very soil where Roshan Singh shed his blood in the struggle against British rule, it should be renamed in his honour," Rana said, adding that such a step would be a fitting tribute to the freedom fighter's sacrifice and help preserve his legacy for future generations. The campaign also witnessed a Tiranga Yatra march led by Sudipa Mitra, a descendant of another martyr. The march proceeded from the statue of Thakur Roshan Singh to the main gate of SRN Hospital, drawing participation from supporters of the renaming movement. In a symbolic show of support, many doctors and staff members from MLNMC and SRN Hospital visited the martyrdom site on Thursday and paid tributes to Roshan Singh. Protesters said that although India gained independence around two decades after Roshan Singh's execution, the site of his martyrdom gradually faded from public memory. They maintain that greater recognition should be accorded to both the place and the revolutionary's contribution to the freedom struggle. Highlighting the significance of the campaign, Shah Alam Rana noted that the centenary year of Roshan Singh's martyrdom will begin on December 19 this year.
