Chennai, April 19 -- Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi on Saturday attacked the Centre over the Women's Reservation constitutional amendment bill, and reiterated that the bill was meant as a front for the delimitation procedure, meant to allegedly "weaken" Southern , North- Eastern and smaller states. "We defeated the Bill to defend the idea of India," said Rahul, while addressing a rally in Chennai. "What is the idea of India? It is written in the Constitution. India .i.e. Bharat, is a Union of States. Meaning, every single state should have a voice in the Union. Meaning that every single state should be free to express itself, its language and to protect its tradition," he added. "When the Prime Minister says one nation, one leader, one language, one people, he attacks the Constitution of India. Please understand what the BJP and RSS are trying to do," added the LoP. Gandhi also used an analogy of ancient warfare to drive home his attack on the BJP. "Like armies of olden days, BJP wants to attack the Tamil language, destroy history, twist Tamil culture. We will never ever allow it," Rahul said. "They do not understand who the Tamil people are. They do not understand what Tamil means to the people of Tamil Nadu." He also reiterated the Opposition's prevailing criticism of the Centre's approach to foreign policy through another analogy. "In the same way, Donald Trump has compromised Narendra Modi, they want a compromised chief minister to run Tamil Nadu," he alleged, adding that the BJP and RSS were "fundamentally anti-Tamil." Gandhi also highlighted Tamil Nadu's development. "You have shown India what social justice actually means. What the protection of women means," he said. He announced six guarantees at the rally, including direct transfers of Rs.2,000 directly to unmarried women, financial aid worth Rs.2000 each for senior citizens and people with disabilities, a scholarship worth Rs.2,000 for college students, and Rs.2,500 as food security to support families. He added that all vacancies in government agencies would be filled within 300 days, and also announced that 60% vacancies would be reserved for locals in Group C and D jobs. "For women, free property registration for all first-time owners of property," he added "We have also run governments in Delhi. We have always seen our partner as equal.
