Dalmandi road widening project: 15 more houses razed
VARANASI, May 31 -- Fifteen more houses were demolished in Dalmandi area of Varanasi as part of a road widening project when the drive, which was halted for a few days due to Bakrid, resumed on Saturday.
The work to demolish over 24 houses is underway. At least, 70 structures, including houses and shops, have been razed so far. Around 200 police personnel, led by assistant commissioner of police (Dashashwamedh), Atul Anjan Tripathi were deployed to ensure security.
Earlier, a PWD team along with JCBs and other machinery, reached the Dalmandi area. During the demolition, movement of people in the surrounding areas was restricted to prevent any accidents.
According to PWD officials, owners of the buildings marked for demolition had already been given compensation. The drive was carried out only after the registration formalities and other administrative procedures regarding the respective properties had been completed. Officials said the drive is being conducted in a phased manner.
A total of 181 buildings have been identified for the project. The administration says the project is crucial for road widening and improving traffic management. ACP Atul Anjan Tripathi said adequate police force had been deployed to ensure the PWD's drive was carried out peacefully....
