Cyber tricksters dupe teacher, elderly couple of Rs 16 lakh
PRAYAGRAJ, May 30 -- Two separate incidents of cyber fraud in Prayagraj have resulted in losses exceeding Rs 16 lakh, with victims including a school teacher and an elderly couple bearing the brunt of lack of awareness. Complaints have been registered at the Cyber Crime Police Station, and investigations are underway.
The first case involves Shokhi Gautam, a teacher residing in Gangotri Nagar, Naini. According to her complaint, she searched online for a customer care number to report a faulty fan and contacted a number listed on Google. The person posing as a customer care representative asked her to share personal details via WhatsApp and directed her to fill out a form. She was then instructed to pay a nominal fee of Rs 25.
Shortly after completing the process, fraudsters allegedly gained access to her Punjab National Bank (PNB) account and siphoned off approximately Rs 13 lakh through RTGS and IMPS transactions.
In the second incident, Jamuna Singh from Katiyari Chakiya village filed a complaint stating that cybercriminals misused his old mobile number-stolen nearly three years ago.
The fraudsters reportedly used the number to create accounts on UPI platforms such as Google Pay and PhonePe. Using these accounts, they carried out unauthorised transactions amounting to Rs 3,75,375 from the joint State Bank of India (SBI) account held by Singh and his wife, Sushila....
