Cousin sisters drown while bathing in pond in Kaushambi
PRAYAGRAJ, June 6 -- Two cousin sisters drowned while bathing in a pond in Sharifpur village under the Manjhanpur area of Kaushambi district on Friday morning. Despite efforts by villagers and family members to rescue them, both were declared dead at the district hospital, police said.
The deceased were identified as Ragini Saroj ,12, daughter of Rakesh Saroj, and Sanjana Saroj ,13, daughter of Rajesh Saroj. Both belonged to Sharifpur hamlet of Jajauli village. Their fathers work as labourers at brick kilns in Bihar.
According to family members, the girls had gone to graze goats near a pond on the outskirts of the village. While bathing in the pond, they reportedly slipped into deep water and drowned.
Meraj, a villager ploughing a nearby field with a tractor, noticed the incident and raised an alarm. He informed the girls' family members and other villagers. Relatives and villagers rushed to the spot and began a rescue operation. After nearly an hour of effort, the girls were pulled from the pond and taken to the district hospital in a private vehicle. However, doctors declared them dead on arrival.
Station house officer Sunil Singh said the bodies had been sent for post-mortem examination and further legal proceedings were underway....
