GORAKHPUR, July 25 -- The Gorakhpur administration has intensified surveillance on social media after widely circulated posts called upon people to gather at Indira Gandhi Crossing on July 28 to protest against the alleged police atrocities on students. The viral messages urged citizens to assemble at the venue and encouraged others to join the demonstration, drawing the attention of local authorities. Police officials said they are closely monitoring the online activity and keeping a watch on the situation. Circle officer (cantonment) Abha Singh said, "We are aware of the posts circulating on social media. The matter is being monitored, and appropriate security arrangements will be made to maintain law and order, if required." Meanwhile, the students' protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi received significant support from the legal fraternity on Friday, as hundreds of advocates from the civil courts in Gorakhpur and Deoria took to the streets in solidarity with the students. The lawyers demanded stringent action against police personnel accused of misbehaving with female students and assaulting protesters during the demonstration in Delhi. Expressing their support for the students' agitation, advocates in Gorakhpur organised a protest march and demanded the resignation of Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Senior advocates Sumit Pandey and Amarnath Gupta alleged that the government's silence over the reported leakage of 152 examination papers indicated its failure to address the issue effectively. In Deoria, scores of lawyers marched from the District Court gate to the Collectorate, raising slogans and demanding a high-level inquiry into the alleged police atrocities on students protesting against examination paper leaks and other student-related issues. The advocates, under the banner of the District Bar Association, submitted a memorandum to district officials outlining their demands. "We are seeking an impartial inquiry into the matter and strict action against those found responsible. Students' future cannot be compromised," the memorandum stated. Earlier, on Thursday night, police detained seven students near the Mahatma Gandhi statue in Golghar while they were allegedly attempting to burn an effigy of Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
