Cops booked, arrested for taking bribe to release robbery accused
Meerut, June 19 -- Two police personnel posted in Meerut have been arrested under the Prevention of Corruption Act for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs.3,000 and releasing a robbery accused who had been arrested on a non-bailable warrant. The case came to light after the accused's mother lodged a complaint, prompting an internal inquiry and scrutiny of CCTV footage.
According to an FIR registered at Railway Road police station on Wednesday, sub-inspector Anoop Kumar and head constable Dinesh Kumar are accused of taking money from the family of robbery accused, Rehan, and subsequently releasing him from custody. Police have launched a search for Rehan, who remains absconding. Station house officer (SHO) Vijay Kumar stated in the FIR that a court had issued a non-bailable warrant against Rehan on June 1 in connection with a robbery case registered at Nauchandi police station in 2023. The court had directed police to arrest Rehan and produce him before it by June 17.
To execute the warrant, Nauchandi police assigned the task to sub-inspector Anoop Kumar on June 4. Acting on the court order, Anoop Kumar, along with Railway Road police station head constable Dinesh Kumar, began searching for the accused.
Police records indicate that on June 12, at around 3:30 pm, the two officers apprehended Rehan, a resident of Makbara Ghosiyan locality. However, instead of following standard procedures, they allegedly brought him to the Kesar Ganj police outpost without informing the in-charge or senior officers. No entry regarding Rehan's detention was reportedly made in official police records. The matter surfaced when Rehan's mother, Rehana, approached police and alleged that the two policemen had taken Rs.3,000 in exchange for her son's release. She claimed that after receiving the money, the officers let Rehan walk free from the Kesar Ganj police outpost. Following the complaint, senior police officials initiated an inquiry. CCTV footage from the area and statements from local residents were examined. During the investigation, footage reportedly showed Anoop Kumar and Dinesh Kumar transporting Rehan on a red motorcycle, corroborating claims that the accused had indeed been taken into custody.
Cantt CO Vishw Jyoti Rai said that an FIR has been registered against the duo under Sections 7 and 13(1)(b) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, as well as Section 199 of the BNS. "Both the accused have been arrested," the officer said....
