contract nurses stage protest, climb water tank
Jaipur, Aug. 9 -- Three contractual nursing workers climbed a water tank demanding the reinstatement of contractual staff and better salaries for them in Jaipur on Friday, days after three students staged a similar protest atop a tank.
Vimal Sharma, 32, Robin Sharma, 28, and Sanjita Chaudhary, 30, climbed the tank Friday morning and remained there despite rain. Several contractual nursing workers later gathered at the site in their support.
The protesters demanded the reinstatement of around 2,300 contractual nursing workers removed in June and immediate recruitment for 12,000 nursing officer and 7,000 ANM posts based on merit and bonus points.
The protestors also alleged that contractual workers were receiving low salaries and being denied benefits despite years of service. Leader of the Opposition Tikaram Jully took a jibe at the BJP government, accusing it of being "insensitive" to the workers' demands.
"The government should send senior officials to the spot, to hold talks with the protesters and take a time-bound decision on their demands" .
He urged the government and warned that the government would be responsible if any untoward incident occurred....
