Rudrapur, Sept. 24 -- A day after a scuffle between Kichha Congress MLA Tilak Raj Behar and a group of BJP workers led by former BJP MLA Rajesh Shukla near a strong room amid voting for civic elections in the corporation, the state Congress unit sought action against those involved and said it would raise the issue in the assembly. "Congress would raise the issue in the assembly and demanded an inquiry and action against the accused," Leader of Opposition Yashpal Arya said at a press conference on Wednesday. The incident took place on Tuesday at the strong room on the premises of the Naveen Mandi Samiti in Kichha after election officials began putting up curtains in front of the facility around 4.30 pm. Behar reached the spot and allegedly objected to the installation, demanding that the curtains be removed. A heated exchange followed between Behar and returning officer Himanshu Kafaltia. Shukla later reached the spot and objected to Behar's presence near the strong room. Supporters of the Congress and BJP leaders subsequently clashed. Police later took Behar and his supporters to Kichha police station, while Shukla and his supporters were taken to the SIDCUL police outpost in Rudrapur. Both groups were released around midnight. Shukla denied that Behar was assaulted by his supporters. He alleged, "Behar and his supporters had creat ed a ruckus at the spot and made several allegations against the Congress camp". Regarding the alleged slap, Shukla said that if Behar proved that one of his supporters had slapped him, he would give Behar the accused's "chopped hand".
